This includes pelvic exams, Pap smears, contraceptive information, pregnancy testing, and emergency contraception. Counseling and education are provided to meet the total health needs of women students at The University of Iowa. Back to Clinical Services list
Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing
The Student Health Service provides for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up examinations of all sexually transmitted diseases. Back to Clinical Services list
Allergy
The Student Health Service (SHS) administers allergy shots (immunotherapy) as a service to our students. Because we don’t have an Allergist on staff, all allergy testing, mixing of extracts, immunotherapy education and instructions, and the very first allergy shots you receive MUST be done by your local allergist or prescribing physician. SHS will store your allergy extract(s) in a temperature-monitored refrigerator, administer your allergy shots under a physician’s supervision, and provide emergency care in case of a reaction to your allergy injections. Click here for instructions for allergy patients.

Medications required for treatment are prescribed by a physician. Student Health has a full-service pharmacy, including many over-the-counter items right on site. The Westlawn Pharmacy can bill to U-Bill, file insurance, or accept cash, check or credit cards. The students may also have prescriptions filled at a retail pharmacy of their choice.

Nurseline
Health information, advice, and assistance is provided when you call 335-9704. Leave a message and a nurse will return your call. Nurseline can help you with whether to make an appointment, how to take self-care measures, prescription or medication questions and much more. Nurseline is available during clinic hours. Messages left after hours will be returned the following day.
What to do after hours? While the Nurseline is available during clinic hours, after hours you still have a great RN resource: the UIHC Integrated Call Center (ICC), a 24/7 Nurseline. Their number is 319-384-8442 and it works just like our SHS Nurseline. Advantages for UI students:
Can save a visit to the Emergency Room. In most cases, a call to the ICC can be made first- and the RN will assess the problem and recommend the appropriate care. They may direct the student to the Emergency Room, but they may also be able to give advice and directions that will avoid a costly ER visit. Often students are given self-care advice and asked to follow up with us at SHS if needed.
SHS receives documentation of all student calls to the ICC. This is great relationship between our two offices that allows for continuity of care and follow-up. We often call students to see how they are, when we receive notification that they called the ICC but didn’t go to the Emergency Treatment Center at the UIHC. It allows us to follow up on the well-being of students who need health care when we are not open. Back to Clinical Services list
Nurse Care Room
Students can utilize the Nurse Care Room (NCR) to meet health-related registration requirements, and to receive follow-up testing after visits with our providers. The Nurse Care Room is nurse directed and staffed by board certified Registered Nurses. Activities that take place in the NCR include:
- Health requirements review and vaccinations
- Lab sample collections (blood draws, urine collection, etc.)
- Blood pressure monitoring
- Respirator mask fit-testing
- Tuberculosis (TB) screening and assessments
- Counseling and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI)
Walk-in clinics are also held in the weeks before early registration in the fall and spring, so that students can conveniently receive any required vaccinations, tests, or titers. These nurses also travel to athletic facilities and the IMU to provide flu vaccinations for students.
The Tuberculosis Surveillance Program (TBSP) is a comprehensive program that includes collaboration with many other departments on campus, including the Office of International Students and Scholars, the Health Science Colleges, the UIHC Departments of Epidemiology and Internal Medicine, and the Johnson County and Iowa Departments of Public Health. Each year approximately 2000 students from virtually all colleges at UI are screened for TB.
