Feeling Under the Weather

Question

I have had a terrible headache for 4 days now, accompanied by a sore throat, congestion, and an achy body. Is this more than just the common cold? I’ve been taking DayQuil and NyQuil by nothing seems to be working, and I’ve been feeling a little lightheaded as well.

Answer

Unfortunately, it is impossible to make a diagnosis without seeing you. Your current symptoms appear to be a mix between those of the common cold and the flu. The differences between a cold and flu can be hard to distinguish when we are feeling under the weather. Colds can last up to two weeks, and include symptoms such as a sneezing, runny/stuffy nose, sore throat, and coughing. Flu-like symptoms can be more severe and can include a fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, aches, and fatigue. Neither colds nor the flu can be fixed with antibiotics from the doctor. However, there are some self-care strategies that you can take to help minimize symptoms. Check out our self-care guide for each: Flu & Common Cold
