Sinus Infection or Cold?

Question

I started to get a cold again about 5 days ago, though I was coughing several days before that. I am concerned that I may have a sinus infection as well because along with all my cold-like symptoms, the area under my eye is tender to the touch, and my upper teeth on the same side hurt. I don't have a fever, however. It also seems odd because usually when I get a cold, I can't buy enough tissues as I am constantly blowing my nose. But this time, when I blow my nose, nothing comes out. It all seems to go into the back of my throat and make me gag.

Does this sound like a sinus infection, or is it just a cold? At what point should I see a doctor if I suspect a sinus infection?

Answer

Sinus infections and colds can have very similar symptoms, so it can be very tricky to decide if you should see a doctor or not. However, many of your symptoms are common in sinus infections. You mention having nasal symptoms, that the area under your eyes is tender, and that your upper teeth hurt. These are often symptoms of a sinus infection. Sinus infections sometimes cause fever, but not always.

It would be wise to schedule an appointment with a health care provider to further evaluate your symptoms and determine the best course of treatment. If you would like to make an appointment at Student Health, please call (319) 335-8394.
