How the Affordable Care Act Could Affect You

News Item Image

Starting January 1, 2014, the Federal Affordable Care Act requires individuals to have insurance (The University of Iowa also currently requires that students enrolled in 5 or more hours carry insurance).

  • If you currently have insurance, you likely won’t need to change as long as your plan meets certain requirements.
  • If you don’t have insurance, you will need to purchase a plan before March 31, 2014 or you may be fined.
    • Starting October 1, 2013 you can visit Healthcare.gov to shop the online health insurance exchanges (“marketplaces”):
      • Depending on your income, you may qualify for premium subsidies (assistance) or Medicaid.
      • You will be able to locate and compare plans. Make sure to pay attention to details like deductibles, out-of-pocket expenses, in-network providers, etc.
    • The University of Iowa offers two plans for students (SHIP or UIGradcare), both of which meet the ACA criteria. Click here for more information.
