Success, Not Excess
UCS & SHW are offering a new confidential support group where students learn the skills necessary to make changes to their alcohol or other drug use in a safe and welcoming environment. The group operates from a non-judgmental, strengths based approach by encouraging the discussion of shared experiences and achieving success on a college campus by learning to remove obstacles created by substance use. The philosophy of the group is holistic, with emphasis on success in academics, relationships, mental and physical health, and other meaningful goals tied to reducing or abstaining from alcohol and other drug use.
Through ‘Success, Not Excess’ students will learn to identify negative consequences they have experienced as a result of their substance use along with establishing skills to prevent such problems. The support group will also provide an environment in which students can explore the connection between their emotional experiences and substance use all while exploring options for substance-free ways to have fun, make social connections, and cope with stress. Participants will include students who are currently thinking about or getting ready to make a change to their alcohol and/or other drug use. Additionally, students who are in the process of working on or sustaining a change to their alcohol or drug use are welcome to attend the support group’s drop in sessions.
Important Notice: “Success, Not Excess” is not a treatment group and will not satisfy any legal, educational, or disciplinary mandates. It is open to UI students who already have begun to or want to make changes to their alcohol or other drug use, as well as students who are maintaining a reduction in or abstinence from previous substance use. This is a “drop-in” group with no attendance requirements. We ask that students not attend the group under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Any records of participation are considered protected health information and are confidential.
The group meets on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm starting on January 26, 2017 in 3223 Westlawn.
