TB Surveillance Program

Student Health has a Tuberculosis (TB) Surveillance Program. Screening and targeted testing for TB is a key strategy for controlling and preventing TB infection and disease on the University of Iowa campus. Early detection provides an opportunity to promote the health of affected individuals through prompt diagnosis and treatment while preventing potential spread to others. These efforts are targeted at groups at highest risk for TB infection (international students and health care workers/students) and groups at highest risk for progression of TB infection to TB disease.

TB Screening / Testing Requirements for all new International Students

Must be done in the United States (after latest arrival). Screening will be completed at the IMU Nurse Care Clinic in the IMU or you can schedule an appointment at Student Health in the Westlawn building. If you have been treated for TB, bring a copy of your TB test result, chest x-ray report, and treatment records in English.

Important Information

You will receive information from the International Student Office regarding screening clinic dates, times, and place. This is done during your first semester, usually during orientation.

  • Bring student ID, copy of insurance card (if you have one; be sure you have signed up for insurance on MyUI), all immunization records, and lab reports to the immunization clinic.
  • Eat and drink plenty of water before you come to your clinic reservation.
  • Make sure you come to your appointment on time, or even a little early!
  • This is a requirement. Get your TB screening done early in your first semester, so you won't have any delays in registering for classes.
