Why is Fentanyl so dangerous?

It has a very small therapeutic window, meaning that the dose to produce a “high” is super close to the dose that can kill a person. In addition, it is often added to other drugs because it is cheap and addictive. It can be made into liquid or powder form and many people are unaware they are taking it. Overdoses and deaths have been extremely common the past few years.

What to do if someone is overdosing?

It may be hard to tell whether a person is high or experiencing an overdose. If you aren't sure, treat it like an overdose—you could save a life. Naloxone is free and readily available in Iowa.

  1. Administer an overdose reversal medication like naloxone (if available) and call 911.
  2. Try to keep the person awake and breathing.
  3. Lay the person on their side to prevent choking.
  4. Stay with the person until emergency assistance arrives.
